This is the most corrupt and disorganized terrestrial border I've ever crossed. When I used this gate to go to Laos, workers asked money for exit stamp even those people who have visa - when we paid, they tried to scum us with exchange (taking 100k instead of asked 50k). For different people they told different prices!

On Laos side you also have to pay. In announcement they say 8.000kip but in fact they charge 20k and simply don't allow your docs till you pay. If you haven't money - they send you to street-organized exchange with double higher courses.

When I used this gate to enter Vietnam with e-visa, guys in different windows first sent me from window to window canceling to process my passport without any explanation. When I finally went out of my patience they took my passport and asked money - 20k. When returning exchange they took 60k, on my question why they started speak vietnamese super fast pushing me out. Since I was in rush for the bus I had to leave this money them

The people who work on this border are disgracing the honor of their country.

Among Na Meo, Nam Can and Cau Treo, it is the biggest and most convenient for cars as the road is better. There are restaurants, sim card shops, money exchanges. Passing with motorbike from Vietnam is impossible, but exit is ok. The main reason is Lao government does not allow motorbike to enter. Neither do Nam Can and Cha Lo. You have to go to Na Meo.

Craziest trip ever! To all the try just fly! It’s an online that we could get a visa upon arrival but it’s not true. We had to take a ride 400 km to the south after they denied us for visa upon arrival.

We were two people travelling by motorbike in Vietnam. Wanted to stay one more month, we decided to chose this border to go to Laos and come back.

-We did our lao visa in Hanoï (done within a day at the embassy, 1 000 000 VND) because Cau Treo doesn't deliver a visa on spot, be careful you must do it before

-Renewed our vietnamese e-visa for 30 days as well, 5 working days before crossing the border

We left our motorbikes in front of the restaurant at Cau Treo, decided to crossed by walk (about 10min walk between Vietnam and Laos) and avoid any troubles/expenses with our motorbikes within borders

-Spent 20 000kip each at the lao entrance (they also exchange money if you don't have any kip, but they do ask for kip)

-Then, spent 50 000 VND each at the new entrance in Vietnam

Process was quite fast and easy, FYI if you come by motorbike the last 30km road is dirty as hell + many trucks but doable!

Good luck

After researching everywhere online, I was sure to get a Visa for Laos upon arrival at this checkpoint. As I arrived they said, since covid they don't give out visa upon arrival at this checkpoint anymore. They told me to go to the Lao Bao checkpoint, 9hrs south. It was late in the evening and there were no busses. A taxi costs about $200. Luckily I met some locals with a car that had the same problem they gave me a ride to the Lao Bao Border. It was a long roadtrip and at least I made some new friends. But just let that be a lesson, you need an evisa at this checkpoint. You won't get a Visa upon arrival here. Next time, I just take a flight.

Definitely should have looked at these reviews before going here. We arrived with all of our required paperwork and Visas and were still denied exit from Vietnam. Despite all government websites stating the border was open, we were not able to pass through. Because of this we overstated our visas which led to a whole rollercoaster of further issues with Vietnam immigration. Spoke with the USA embassy as well as Immigration in Hanoi. No officials will help you. Just go to Lao Bao or fly out of the country early. It’s not worth the stress.

See below, Cau Treo border pass is listed as an open border for both exit and entry. This is from the Vietnamese government website. It is wrong. The only way to pass through here is by obtaining a Loas Visa from the embassy in Hanoi then taking a bus to this checkpoint.

They request 50,000VND. They didn' tell me why. Just request money. It looks like Vietnamese culture. They always request UTM. No reason, just Vietnamese culture

Beware that when crossing this border, you will not be allowed to proceed unless you pay fees that are charged by officials representing both Laos and Vietnam.

Vietnam charges a stamping fee of 50.000 VND, even if you already have a Vietnamese visa and are just exiting the country. Laos charges a fee of 8,000 Kip, even if you have a visa for Laos that you fully paid for.

You must pay in the specified currencies, and these fees are not disclosed until you arrive at the border. Otherwise, the border crossing zone is fine for what it is.

Absolutely appalling; not all but some of the officers here will steer in the wrong direction, cause you delays and then bribe you and laugh it.

Don’t cross here unless you have extra time and money to be wasted.

Cannot pass with motorbike. Can exchange money. Can buy sim card and data. Laos side scene is magnificent with rivers, mountains and clouds.

We took a night bus from Hanoï to Ventiane, it arrived during the night and we waited until 7am before discovering we couldn't cross the border: Here if you don't already have your Visa for Laos you cannot pass (they do not deliver any).
We had to get to Lào Bao border, long, painful and stressful!
